2014 Meeting objectives

From August until December 2014, the monthly DCAT meetings are centered around defining, refining and prioritizing DSpace use cases.

These use cases are expected to have an important impact on the medium and long term roadmap of DSpace, starting with DSpace 6 in 2015.

August Meeting Agenda: End user use cases

During the august meeting we will be discussing use cases that affect users who use DSpace:

  • as anonymous, non-logged in users
  • as registered, logged-in users who do not have any specific administrative rights or responsibilities. For such users, submission can fall under the use cases.

    As requested on the meeting invitation, here are some authentication related use cases that I pulled from our DSpace test plan.  I hope this is useful.

    • Anonymous user
      • As an anonymous user browsing the repository, I should only see items for which I have access to metadata. (supported in 4.x)
      • As an anonymous user searching the repository, I should only see search results for items in which I have access to metadata. (supported in 3.x discovery)
      • As an anonymous user searching the repository, the browser should not attempt to render restricted thumbnails in search results. (not supported)  Unable to locate Jira server for this macro. It may be due to Application Link configuration.
      • As an anonymous user browsing the repository, the browser should not attempted to render restricted thumbnails on community, collection, or item pages. (not supported)  Unable to locate Jira server for this macro. It may be due to Application Link configuration.
      • As an anonymous user navigating the repository by facets, facet counts should reflect items to which I have access.(supported)
      • As an anonymous user reviewing more like this results, item suggestions should honor my access rights.(not supported)  Unable to locate Jira server for this macro. It may be due to Application Link configuration.
      • As an anonymous attempting to access an item, bitstream, community, or collection to which I do not have access, an appropriate message will appear conveying the restriction and a link will be generated to an authentication page (supported)
    • Authenticated User
      • As an authenticated user browsing the repository, I should only see items for which I have access to metadata. (supported in 4.x)
      • As an authenticate user searching the repository, I should only see search results for items in which I have access to metadata. (supported in 3.x discovery)
      • As an authenticated user searching the repository, the browser should not attempt to render restricted thumbnails in search results. (ideally, it would be good to fully check the thumbnail accessibility before attempting to render) (not supported, have local fix, ticket linked above)
      • As an authenticated user browsing the repository, the browser should not attempted to render restricted thumbnails on community, collection, or item pages. (not supported, ticket linked above)
      • As an authenticated user navigating the repository by facets, facet counts should reflect items to which I have access. (supported)
      • As an authenticated user reviewing more like this results, item suggestions should honor my access rights.(not supported, have partial fix locally, ticket linked above)
      • As an authenticated attempting to access an item, bitstream, community, or collection to which I do not have access, an appropriate message will appear conveying the restriction(supported)
    • Other UI use cases (anonymous and authenticated)
      • Links generated by DSpace to items contained in a streaming service, should honor the DSpace item/bitstream permissions (not supported in DSpace, needs vendor support, enhancement idea)
      • View item accessible via a streaming service (autoplay, no-autoplay, authenticate through streaming service) (partially supported) End User - Visitor can play media hosted on an external streaming media server
      • As an authenticated or anonymous user, usage statistics will be accessible based on configuration settings. (supported per documentation)
      • When creating a community or collection, allow inaccessible collections and communities to be hidden from users who will not have access to the contents (not supported, enhancement idea) Admin UI - Configure hidden communities and collections
    • Other user
      • As a user harvesting items using OAI-PMH, I should only retrieve items for which metadata is accessible to anonymous users. (not supported, have local fix)  Unable to locate Jira server for this macro. It may be due to Application Link configuration. , (http://sourceforge.net/p/dspace/mailman/message/30190859/)
      • As a user harvesting bitstreams using OAI-PMH, I should only retrieve bitstreams which are accessible to anonymous users. (supported)
      • As a user accessing the DSpace REST API without specific user credentials, I should only retrieve items for which metadata is accessible to anonymous users. (have not tested)
      • Honor anonymous access when generating a sitemap. (not supported, have local fix)  Unable to locate Jira server for this macro. It may be due to Application Link configuration.

    Thanks Terry! Since these originate from your test plan, does that mean that you have all of these use cases implemented right now?

    Which ones should still flow back into the core DSpace according to you?

    A few areas I'd love to discuss if there is time:

    Multi-lingual use cases

    • Submitting metadata in multiple languages for a single DSpace item
    • Submitting different items, each with metadata in one specific language
    • Easy access to items in a language that I understand
    • Accessing items through subject taxonomies in my own language, regardless of whether the subjects were originally provided in my own language.

    Licensing use cases

    • Submitting user who just wants his material to be open accessible and who sees different licensing options as too complicated
    • Submitting user who wants to supply his or her own license terms
    • Submitting user who wants to apply different licences for different bitstreams attached to the same item
    • User with many submissions in the repository who wants to open up access to a number of them of them with a friendlier license at once.

    Authentication use cases

    • I want to login using credentials from an institution that is integated with OpenAthens 
    • I want to login using credentials from an institution that is integrated with InCommon 
    • I want to login using credentials from a popular online service I use such as Google, Facebook, Twitter or ORCID (OAuth)
    • Once logged in, I expect to automatically have the rights to submit the collections to which I'm affiliated or entitled to submit to by the organization operating the repository.

    Author profile use case

    • I would like to have more prominent visibility in the form of an author profile where my publications are listed
    • I want my publications all in one place, I don't like to see my publications spread over several incomplete lists based on how the publisher spelled my name in the original publication.

    Submission automatisation use cases

    • I want to allow the institutional repository of my institution to automatically include all the publications listed on
      • My Google Citations profile
      • My Academia.edu profile
      • My LinkedIn publications list
      • My ORCID works profile
      • My researcherID profile
    • In case these sources don't have the file available for my IR, I want to be able to upload my file in the IR if I can do this fast & efficiently.

    This will be my first time to attend one of these calls. Here are a few things I would like to talk about, if possible:

    Browsing/Discovery Integration - Navigational Use Cases:

    • I want to get a sense of the research of various authors in my university. While browsing author names I click on an author’s name. There are a lot of items listed by title. I want to see a breakdown of the types of works they have authored and the subjects they have written about and be able to limit the list accordingly. (If I search by author name or if discovery is turned on and I select an author name from the discovery list, then I have this option – but even if discovery is turned on and I go through the browse menu, then I do not have this option.)
    • I want to see a list of all the theses and/or dissertations for which a faculty member at my university has been advisor or committee member. I do a search for their name (or browse to their name from the author list) but cannot distinguish between the different roles they have had.
    • I want to see what articles have been published in a given journal by authors at my university. I am curious to see a breakdown of which departments the local authors are affiliated with. My university has customized DSpace to allow both a Browse by Journal Name and a Browse by Department option, but I can’t get them to work together. I can't do an advanced search, because I am not sure what exactly I am looking for.

    Faculty Profile Use Case:

    •  I want to know the items that are related to me in the repository and I want to know what relationship they have to me. When I search by my name I get a long list, some of the items are articles I authored, some are theses I advised or was committee member for, and some of them I can't see why they are in the results for my name at all. I want to see this information organized automatically in a meaningful way.

    A couple of items I am interested in.

    Hide restricted items from the front page

    Being able to not show restricted items in the recent page on the main page. I know I can restrict this to the collection, but still I like to have that what’s new on the first page, but there are some collections we can’t automatically display everything for so they are restricted. But they still show on the first page when submitted. Does that make sense?

    Tagging - crowdsourcing additional metadata AFTER items have already been archived.

    I like the possibility of tagging. We are going to be loading some community photos, and it would be great to be able to send it out to our Alumni and say do you know who or when this was taken and get them to help with some of the metadata.

    Photo carousel for designated collections

    I also would like to see the photo carousel work for designated collections if possible like they have in the Knowledge bank.

    HTML 5 streaming video

    HTML 5 video automatically setup would be fantastic for streaming video!

    Individual submitters should have rights to edit their own submissions. For example, for the "Faculty Publications" collection, each faculty member should have rights to edit their own submissions.

    Are there any other features that DSpace is lacking in, that causes you to consider Digital Common's BePress, ContentDM, or an alternative repository system? Such as improved image management.

    Also, is the lack of thumbnails after submission a strike against DSpace, i.e. having to wait for some nightly process to generate the thumbnail.

    Is there interest in a Google Maps view, of collections with lat/long metadata?

    Should the discovery faceting have a better user experience, such as a date histogram?

    Also, where are users looking for latest developments in DSpace for enhancing their DSpace? Are you waiting for the latest release of DSpace to contain the feature out-of-the-box, or would you be actively looking for people's customizations to DSpace.

     

    With the REST API, you could build a new user interface on top of DSpace, that could be completely custom, and not bound to any DSpace existing user interfaces legacy setup.

    A curation task, command line and GUI for both JSPUI and XMLUI, that applies a cover page to applicable bitstreams to identify where the item was downloaded from amongst other things. I believe some code has already been written by Peter Dietz for such a function.

    Most definitely ORCID integration using Authority Control and system integration with VIVO using the ORCID ID's.

    Perhaps an open data server for vocabularies compatible in format with DSpace.

    Also the means to display the top 10 downloaded items per site/community/collection.

    Also integration with Altmetrics if DSpace is not integrated with VIVO. Does VIVO integrate with Altmetrics?

    Also a much simpler way for Repository Managers to setup discovery search/browse indexes!

    Also a much simpler way to setup the Mirage2 theme using a GUI perhaps?

    Also ,can we start user documentation directed at repository managers and librarians etc.. Something like a user manual that is not technical.

    Also the ability to export search results in appropriate formats, eg: CSV, BibTex etc...

      Perhaps an open data server for vocabularies compatible in format with DSpace.

      Hilton have you tried ASKOSI server?  we are implementing it when the vocabulary is big (> 1000 terms) or multilingual or is delvered directly in SKOS...

    Discussion on these topics should ideally continue on those pages.

    Anyone can add use case pages. If they are end user related, they should be labeled as uc-end-user. 

    Hilton Gibson - Great use cases, but I didn't have the time yet to add specific pages for those, please feel free to go ahead. I do note that some are more administrative use cases and not necessarily end users

    Terrence W Brady - I personally think the honouring permissions problems are no-brainers and should be fixed. In that sense, I think they may better be broken up into different JIRA reports so that devs can start to hack on these individually.
