Meeting Schedule and Attendance

DSpace Developer meetings are a time when Committers and interested Developers can discuss new software features, upcoming releases of DSpace software, and generally plan out the roadmap of DSpace. All meetings are public. We welcome anyone and everyone to attend, speak their opinions or just listen in on the discussions. Please note that we archive all discussions (see Meeting Archives), as a service for those who are unable to attend.

DSpace Developer meetings take place on the following schedule:

  • Every Wednesday at 20:00 UTC/GMT in #duraspace IRC channel
  • All meetings are held for 1 hour (although, admittedly, discussion sometimes extends beyond that)

See the world clock to determine the meeting time where you live.

Meeting topics often include:

  • Recent updates on upcoming DSpace releases, bug fixes or features
  • Reviewing of recent reported issues/bugs/feature requests (see JIRA Cleanup Sessions for more info)
  • Occasionally we vote or make decisions on upcoming DSpace technology plans/roadmap (see Developer Voting Procedures for more info)

If you are unable to attend a meeting, please feel free to add your own notes/comments to the meeting's wiki page.

Developers Meeting on Weds, May 19, 2010

Agenda

  • Any Announcements / Additional Agenda Items?
  • DSpace 1.6.1 Updates (Kim Shepherd)
    • Help us test DSpace 1.6.1! – Demo site is running pre-1.6.1 and is an easy way to test!
    • Release still on schedule for Friday, May 21st?
    • Other updates?
  • Discussion Topics:
    • Jira Workflow (Robin Taylor)
    • Next Special Topics Meeting? – it's about time we schedule another one. Possible topics for the next meeting may include (voice your opinion on the Doodle Poll if you cannot make the meeting ).
      1. Runtime Reconfiguration - How do we make DSpace easier to reconfigure while it is still running (e.g. either via Admin UI configs, or just enabling dspace.cfg to be reloaded without having to restart tomcat)?
      2. Asynchronous releases / Continued Modularization – Do we want to take steps to modularize DSpace even more? This may or may not include rearranging SVN so that many Maven modules are developed out of "modules" area instead of out of "trunk"?
      3. DSpace UI Development / Support – Do we continue to essentially require UI-parity for all new features?
      4. DSpace Services – Perhaps an overview of DSpace Services Framework or a Q&A with mdiggory around this framework? Do we all want to "buy into" this framework and work to better integrate it into DSpace?
      5. What is 2.0, really? How do we get there? – essentially a continuation of our previous RoadMap discussion. More planning/next steps towards 2.0.
  • JIRA Catch-Up – starting with issue DS-517 (and getting as far as we can).

Meeting Notes

1.6.1 is will be released Fri, Special Topics Mtg next week on DSpace Services, More research to do on Jira Workflow

  • Updates on 1.6.1 from Kim
    • 1.6.1 is online at demo.dspace.org, people are testing, would love more!
    • The documentation issues are just staying open until the day before release (or so) in case there are last minute changes
    • The other "fix for 1.6.1" open issues were committed on the weekend and will be resolved after a bit more testing
    • It looks like we're still all on track for 21st May GMT
    • Big thanks to everyone who contributed code, raised issues, helped with testing and review, updated documentation!
    • It wasn't huge in terms of numbers, but it's a good stable release of 1.6 and I feel that sticking to our plan re: release timing worked out well. Good turnaround – only 44 days between the announcement and the code freeze.
  • Jira Workflow Discussion
    • General consensus that having an automated "stagnant issues" report would help us all keep on top of old issues.
  • Next Special Topics Mtg
    • Next Week (May 26) will be a Special Topics Meeting on DSpace Services Framework, led by Mark Diggory. This discussion may also dig into how we can use Services to potentially support Runtime Reconfiguration (e.g. changing configs on fly or moving configs to DB)

Action Items

  • Release 1.6.1 on Friday - Yea!
  • Research automated Jira reports
  • Send out email on Homework for Special Topics Meeting next week.
