2) Community Requirements Development Chat Summary - Dorothea Salo
a. A Successful Failure (A_Successful_Failure.pdf)
i. Active, respectful participation from developer pool
ii. Some good feedback from repository managers, but very low participation
iii. Detailed discussion notes can be found on wiki (Community Requirements Gathering)
b. Question raised: Where are the repository managers? How or why aren't they participating in discussions targeted for them and intended to give them voice? What could work better and how can DSpace Foundation help to facilitate such discussions? Discussion continued later in the meeting - some observations/suggestions:
i. LISTSERV discussions - unsure of which list to use, often use wrong lists, too intimidating to use list
ii. Mentorship program to help new adoptors
iii. Focus groups - work on defined timeframe and topic
iv. Hold state or regional user group mtgs (Boston/Lois Widmer, Tennesse/Ronee Francis, Texas, Baltimore/Washington D.C.)
v. Promote the solutions/add-ons that are available - what the do and how to use them
vi. Create a vibrant, lively forum on www.dspace.org, one exists, how do we draw RMs there? (Shane Beers willing the help
moderate)
vii. Hold a DSpace issue 'surgery' at the next user group meeting (OR2009) w/panel of developers/experts available to help solve
issues
viii. Encourage the use of a social networking tool - like Crowdvine or Ning.com - tag and describe interests, browse interests,
make 'friends', send mgs, ask questions, blog
ix. Distribute DSpace instance list with more geographic info (state)
x. Identify leaders for specific regions or use cases
xi. Interactive video conferencing (Meretec/Google Chat)
xii. Many find RMs see the bug reports, LISTSERV discussions/chats as invaluable resources
xiii. Not all DSpace administrators fit into the category of 'repository managers' - and don't feel they have the right or
responsibility to speak on behalf of their organization - but they have expertise that would be useful to the DSpace
community, how can we help to get them involved?
