DuraSpace Technology Concentration Areas

The DuraSpace organization provides leadership and innovation around four open technology platforms:

Not all of these platforms may provide projects for a given Google Summer of Code.  It all depends on whether or not mentors are available during that given year. See below for information about which DuraSpace open technologies have projects available for this year's Google Summer of Code.

GSOC 2010 Projects Available

For Google Summer of Code 2010, the following DuraSpace open technologies have projects available:

Student Application Process

The determination of appropriate projects is a collaborative effort between those community members (preferably developers) and students (preferably computer science students or adepts). We highly recommend that prospective students join in to the appropriate IRC channel and list-servs and discuss ideas for project with the community prior to submitting a proposal.  See the GSOC Information page for a given DuraSpace technology for links to that technology's IRC channel(s) and mailing list(s).

The order of your proposal submission is irrelevant in the decision making process for selection. What is more important is that the mentors for your project have a strong interest in supporting it during the evaluation process.

Review the existing project ideas (see "GSOC Projects Available" section above) or suggest your own and place your student proposal at the GSOC Site: http://socghop.appspot.com

A word of warning, in past years, bulk applications have been immediately rejected as "insincere".

All proposals should effectively outline:

  1. who you are (i.e. your academic background)
  2. why you want to participate
  3. what you propose to do (and with which DuraSpace technology or technologies)
  4. how you propose to do it
  5. and finally a clearly defined timeline/project plan

The student application process can be competitive.  DSpace technology received about 30 applications last year, of which only 4 projects were awarded by Google. Yes, that is correct, we do not select how many students can ultimately win.  We only rank them according to the communities interest in mentoring the project. Many years it is as much a competition between the mentors as it is the students.

Good luck!
