Rough Draft begun 20150206 - Layne Johnson

Context

Many institutions that have implemented VIVO have expressed the need for the development of visualization applications. The current visualization tools that are part of VIVO were created by Indiana University several years ago and have not been updated, include code that does not meet the requirements for moving VIVO from incubator to project status, and do not function correctly, thus misrepresenting data or unable to represent data. Since the initial visualization tool was developed, other open source visualization tools have become available. For example, Northwestern University uses Lattice Grid to visualize VIVO data. A plethora of commercially available visualization tools are available, and the core VIVO code needs to be modified so that it is modular and capable of accommodating any number of visualization plug ins. This task force proposes to organize a suite of standard visualization tools for use in future releases of VIVO.

Objectives

  • Identify existing open source and commercial visualization tools that could be used in VIVO
  • Identify VIVO community members who are using or developing visualization tools
  • etc

Context

Provide a brief description of why the Task Force is being proposed. Include sufficient background information to allow the reader to understand how the work fits into the current context of the current activities of the VIVO project. Only 2-3 bullet points or sentences are necessary.
