The VIVO-ISF has taken a number of individual design patterns in the VIVO 1.5 ontology and consolidated them into a consistent pattern involving a vivo:Relationship and two distinct related 'Things.'

The additional specification of an Agent that has assigned the relationship is available but primarily used only for representing research grants as a subclass of vivo:Relationship – in this case, grants data is likely to include the name of the funding organization responsible for awarding the grant and hence establishing the grant relationship.
