  • Weill Cornell - 1) Weill use case discussion - creating a reporting tool based on results obtained from SPARQL queries. Possible to store SPARQL queries in the database? So that the reporting tools could be run repeatedly without the need to re-enter the SPARQL queries. 2) Cleaning up the data. Noticed some academic degrees have different abbreviations but mean the same qualifications. e.g. MD (US), M.B.,B.Ch., B.A.O. (Ireland) refer to Doctor of Medicine. We just created the academic degrees (different resource URIs) that are not in the default list. How do people tackle this?

VIVO Conference workshop announcement

We invite all interested parties to submit workshop proposals for the Third Annual VIVO Conference in August. Workshops will be taught on Wednesday, August 22 and each will be 3.5 hours long.

We strongly encourage proposals which incorporate a lively presentation style and which use a variety of instructional approaches (e.g. lecture, demonstration, group discussion, brainstorming, hands-on exercises, case studies) and materials (e.g. slides, handouts, code snippets and sample data on the VIVO wiki) throughout the session.
To apply, please submit a one-page document describing the following:

  1. What content will be covered?
  2. Who will likely attend (what is the target audience)?
  3. What is the expected outcome? Objectives?
  4. Your instructional approach and proposed materials for the workshop.

Potential workshop topics:

  • Introduction to VIVO, research discovery, and the semantic web
  • Implementation and adoption of VIVO
  • Theory and practice of working with the VIVO Ontology
  • Building applications that use VIVO-compliant data
  • Visualization
  • Harvester and Data Ingest
  • Researcher collaboration and networking
  • Managing and discovering knowledge about researchers across institutional boundaries
  • The intersection of VIVO and international research standards
  • Researcher workflows and open research representations
  • Institutional Perspectives on Policy and Research Representation
  • Development and extensions of the VIVO platform

The deadline to submit a workshop proposal is March 23, at 5:00pm ET. Decisions will be announced via email by Friday, March 30. Accepted workshops may be recorded and all workshops will need to place instructional materials on SourceForge for use by workshop participants. All chosen workshops will receive a portion of the workshop registration fees from their session to compensate them for the time it takes to prepare a high-quality workshop.
We'll select our conference workshops from the pool of submitted proposals. For further details or inquiries, please contact the Program Chair, Simon Porter at simon.porter@unimelb.edu.au. Please forward this message to colleagues who may be interested.

Notable Development List Traffic

  • Alex – updating the VIVO Virtual Appliance and its documentation
  • update on CSV file (csvPerson) ingest at Scripps (apparently getting into an infinite loop)
  • Tammy – avoiding display of article types

Implementation Fest planning

Look for upcoming announcement on http://vivoweb.org. Dates are May 15 and 16, with an optional Introduction to VIVO session on Monday afternoon, May 14.
