Developers Meeting on Weds, October 6, 2010

Agenda

  • JIRA Catch-Up (for first 20 mins or so of meeting) – starting with issue DS-632
  • DSpace 1.7 Features/Updates
  • Documentation on Wiki discussions – any followup comments/suggestions?
    • Suggestions so far from recent dspace-devel email thread:
      1. DSpace Documentation Area is where all Doc changes will officially take place (starting with 1.7.0 release).
      2. When we cut a new release, we will export an HTML & PDF "static" copy of documentation as the 'official release docs'
      3. Before the next Major release (1.8.0), we may archive a read-only version of the Wiki Documentation to a new space (named "DSDOC1.7" or similar). This would be completely read-only (even to committers) and would only exist just in case a serious issue was found in the 1.7.x docs and we needed to re-generate HTML or PDF versions at a later time. Eventually this archived area would be deleted once it was no longer necessary.
    • Jeff Trimble will also be working on some other best-practices & general policies for our new wiki docs
  • Time permitting, we could also discuss recent Memory Leak/Performance threads
  • Teaser: coming soon, DSpace JIRA Migration to http://jira.duraspace.org/
    • Looks to be more work than initially anticipated to merge DSpace's JIRA issues, users, groups into an existing JIRA. Tim still investigating, and we hope to still get this completed very soon.

Meeting Notes

Main Topics: 1.7 updates, Docs on Wiki management, JIRA review

  • JIRA Review – ended with DS-637
  • 1.7 Updates
    • Feature freeze in 2 weeks (Oct 22), RC1 two weeks later (Nov 5)
    • DSUG 2010 on Nov 10, just after SPARC conference. Peter Dietz will be presenting on DSpace 1.7.0
    • Some discussion of XMLUI Theme issues (around structural.xsl, and how daunting it can be for new XMLUI users). This is in regards to a recent dspace-tech thread
    • More general updates
  • General approval for how we propose to manage Documentation on Wiki. Process will be as follows:
    1. DSpace Documentation Area is where all Doc changes will officially take place (starting with 1.7.0 release).
    2. When we cut a new release, we will export an HTML & PDF "static" copy of documentation as the 'official release docs'
    3. Before the next Major release (1.8.0), we will archive a read-only version of the Wiki Documentation to a new space (named "DSDOC1.7" or similar). This would be completely read-only (even to committers) and would only exist just in case a serious issue was found in the 1.7.x docs and we needed to re-generate HTML or PDF versions at a later time. Eventually this archived area would be deleted once it was no longer necessary.
      • Although this copy will be read-only, we will enable the ability to add Comments to pages (that way people can still report issues in these old docs as necessary
      • Suggested that we also should add an "Errata" section to our primary DSpace Documentation Area, to document any known issues to old documentation.
  • JIRA migration for DSpace is under slight delay. Unfortunately a little more complex than initially thought to merge two JIRA systems (along with all their users/groups). Tim will be working with Chris Wilper to thoroughly test this before we go forward. Hope is to have ready sometime next week (if possible).
