Special Topics Meeting on Weds, April 7, 2010

Agenda

As discussed in our last few meetings, tomorrow's DSpace Developers Meeting (Weds April 7) will be a Special Topics Meeting discussing the upcoming DSpace RoadMap

As usual, this meeting will be held in the #duraspace IRC channel at 20:00 UTC. To determine your local time, check the world clock: http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?hour=20&min=0&sec=0&p1=0

This Special Topic Meeting will concentrate on upcoming DSpace RoadMap, 1.7 and beyond. The primary goals of this meeting are to:

  1. Begin to plan out what features/changes should happen in the DSpace 1.7 release
  2. Begin to layout a general timeline for achieving 1.7 by December.
  3. Begin to develop proposals/ideas for a longer term RoadMap (beyond 1.7 and towards a 2.0 version)

Meeting Notes

Special Topic Meeting on DSpace RoadMap. Concentration was on initial planning for 1.7.0. Also some discussion of 2.0

  • Began by discussing potential features/work that could be released as part of DSpace 1.7. Potential features which should be ready include:
    • CGIProposal (Richard Rodgers/MIT)
    • CurationTaskProposal (Richard Rodgers/MIT)
    • AIP Backup and Restore (Tim Donohue/DuraSpace)
    • SWORD Client for DSpace? (Robin Taylor)
    • Rewrite of Creative Commons licensing (MIT)
    • Mark Wood's XML-based "gadget" for basic repository size statistics?
  • Discussion turned towards DSpace Services and integration of DSpace 2.0 work, and RoadMap towards 2.0. Despite no final decisions, we came to some general consensus around how to move forward:
    • Rough consensus that we should continue to slowly integrate in DSpace 2.0 work (and move towards that prototype implementation) – we've already integrated in 2.0 work into 1.5.2 and 1.6.0, just need to decide what is next to add to 1.7.0
    • General confusion / lack of understanding of the 2.0 work and DSpace Services
    • Rough consensus that we should also keep track of Fedora RoadMap, and look to see if there are any future "overlaps" that may provide opportunities

Action Items

  • All Developers should begin to pull together these ideas (and any others) into JIRA under the new 1.7 Version
  • Tim will work with Mark Diggory and Graham Triggs (maybe also Brad McLean) to help provide better training/documentation for rest of developers to get up-to-speed on DSpace 2.0 & DSpace Services. We also need to begin planning what is logical to incorporate (or build) into 1.7, that brings us closer to 2.0 work.
