The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) is dedicated to advancing linked data and integrating it into library cataloging and metadata practices. This page provides an overview of PCC's linked data initiatives and developments since 2016.

PCC’s Commitment to Linked Data Implementation

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) is committed to the advancement of linked data and its implementation in library cataloging and metadata practices. The transition to linked data is not merely a technological shift; it represents a fundamental evolution in how library metadata is structured, shared, and utilized. After a decade of working groups and task forces examining the potential of linked data in cataloging and metadata workflows, we are now in a phase of active implementation. The PCC will continue collaborating with the Library of Congress and the international BIBFRAME community to develop production-level support, including training, while also engaging with the work of the wider linked data community, including linked data vocabularies the PCC wants to strategically prioritize. The PCC will strategically monitor and support other linked data initiatives that meet the interoperability needs of our cooperative cataloging community.

As initially discussed in the Linked Data Tactical Planning Meeting in November 2024, PCC members bring collective intellectual expertise to linked data implementation, ensuring that metadata becomes more authoritative, flexible, and interoperable in an evolving information environment. Our efforts contribute to:

  • Enhancing resource discovery by making library metadata more accessible and integrated with the broader web.
  • Expanding the reach of library data beyond traditional catalogs, supporting interoperability with research data, digital humanities, and AI applications.
  • Ensuring sustainability and adaptability by fostering a linked data ecosystem that meets the needs of future information seekers.
  • Staying abreast of emerging technologies, such as AI and machine learning, and their impact on linked data creation and management.

To realize implementation, we are now leveraging lessons learned to create scalable, efficient, and sustainable workflows. Collaboration, adaptability, and shared expertise will remain at the core of our work. PCC is committed to leading this shift and ensuring that library metadata remains relevant, discoverable, and sustainable in an increasingly digital and interconnected world.
