Notes
Welcome – All
- Agenda Additions; Follow Ups; Reports (5 min.)
a. Note taker for this meeting is Bruce Herbert
b. Lyrasis update (Laurie or Mic)
Interviews for two candidates for community director position of open source programs. First interview is tomorrow, second one is Friday.
Join if you can. Feel free to ask questions. Lyrasis Board met last week. Meeting was interesting, entire board was there in person.
Big topic of conversation was DSpace and the Latin American community. VIVO was also of interest to the Latin American community.
There are a number of installations down there. They are interested because of both open science and
knowledge/info management. A task force has been formed with Mic and Washington participating. The goal of the task force is to support the
open-source programs in Latin America, how to keep up to date with the technology, language, and other issues. The Lyrasis Board supports this Task Force.
c. Developer updates (Brian; Dragan): https://wiki.lyrasis.org/display/VIVO/VIVO+1.14.1+Release+Announcement.
Small patch release that mitigates a minor security issue. The patch mitigated an external issue.
Dragan also submitted an abstract to May EuroCRIS conference to describe VIVO code development over the last two years.
2. Past Business – Updates (Bryan - 1 min.)
a. Barcelona Declaration – update – future guest presenter (April/May)
b. Grants
- Two requests to Chair – letters of support - see attachments
3. New Business
a. Lyrasis / VIVO Budget - see attachment (Terrie - 20 min.)
Weill Cornell is reducing membership to Silver level for two years, which reducing the budget by 15k.
This, along with other smaller cuts to membership levels, means we have a deficit. Bryan suggested to better understanding as to forces driving deficit.
Mic replied it is drops in membership, not a rise in expenses. Laurie mentioned the budget assumes Clarivate doesn’t renew as a service provider.
The budget needs to be approved by the April meeting so Laurie can give to Lyrasis.
b. Partner Updates - SIGMA - (Ana – 20 min.)
In Spain there are 89 universities, with about 50 being public institutions. Many universities use their own CRIS systems. Most CRIS systems have greater
functionality that VIVO, including HR, funding and proposal tracking and other research management functions. Spain is also interested in creating a national CRIS system,
though Anna has doubts, that acts as a research portal that could use VIVO. Anna showed the below diagram. Sigma is engaged in developing this solution. There was
interest in using VIVO but the current VIVO system doesn’t serve all needs, so they are pausing VIVO development. Her developers don’t have the right expertise to
develop VIVO. In addition, Sigma does not really see the need for semantic technologies. Instead, they are focused on developing a portal using Angular. Sigma is
interested in also exploring generative AI technologies. They are interested in searching for information using natural language models.
A University in Canada is trying to create a chat box within VIVO to use AI Search using VIVO Ontology
c. Membership - growth strategies (All – 5 min.)
i. Tracking / knowing our VIVO implementers(?)
ii. Membership Sub-Committee re-start?
- Individual memberships?
- Sponsor membership - revitalization.
We cleaned up our VIVO registry (Registry of VIVO users (self-reported) here: https://registry.lyrasis.org/registry/?gv_search=&filter_10=VIVO&filter_4_6=&filter_3=&filter_20=&filter_28=&mode=all).
We drafted a membership growth plan. In order to attract new members, we have to articulate a strategy for the VIVO community that motivates organizations to become members.
A strategic roadmap for the VIVO community for the next 5 years (Mic).
Is there a solution to track who is downloading our software? This never really moved forward because the community thought this was counter to the open source community norms (Brian).
Bryan argued that we need to have a more business approach to gather some basic information. Robert highlighted the strategies highlighted in the It Takes a Village project.
d. Expanding VIVO presence - (Bruce – 7 min.)
