What is Project Governance?

The Library Simplified project governance establishes the

  • Principles and goals for the project
  • Strategic direction and Product Roadmap
  • Accountability
  • Sustainability plan
  • Management decision framework
  • Means of conducting operations

Governance is based on a representative, community-based membership model incrementally rewarding members who have made the greatest commitments to the project.

Project Governance Groups

Governance (Leadership)

The Governance Group provides project program oversight and ensures that the priorities of the Management Group and members are met.  Their are four basic steering commitees within the Governance Group:

  1. Steering - Provides strategic direction to the Projects and the Program at large
  2. Communication - Help provide communication and marketing strategy project
  3. Strategy & Policy - Presents key policy decisions to the Governance Group for discussion and approval
  4. Funding - Raising funds and securing other resources on behalf of the Projects and Programs

The current members of the Steering Group are being formed.

Working Committees and Contributors

The Working Committees and Contributors are made up of the Open Source Community and Partner Library project members.  Representatives are from institutions contributing at least 0.5 FTE in-kind developers. The group will also include some elected member representatives contributor levels.  They are organized into 4 working groups:

  1. Product - Soliciting and corrdinating the product roadmap from the community at lage
  2. UX - Helping manage UX design and accessibility needs
  3. Technology and Code - Guiding core technology development and committer access as well as managing code maintenance and community contribution

Technology and Code Management Group

Committers have autonomous control over the code and are also the primary support team for the project. The primary responsibilities of Committers are:

  • Maintain the codebase; Committers are the only individuals who can actively change/commit to the codebase
  • Review all code contributions/changes to ensure stability, etc
  • Merge/accept community code contributions
  • Help to resolve bugs or security issues within codebase
  • Help to provide ongoing support to community developers and users (via IRC, mailing lists, etc.)
  • Perform and manage new releases based on the roadmap.

Anyone may be nominated as a Committer by anyone else. Typically, nominations are made by existing Committers on the basis of sustained contribution to SimplyE that indicates an ability to fulfill Committer responsibilities.  Only existing Committers may vote to add a nominated person to the Committers group.

Partner Institutions

The Partner Advisory Team (PPAT) represents the interests of SimplyE managers and administrators across the library industry and, indirectly, SimplyE end users. PPAT is a permanent Working Group that advises other SimplyE project governance and leadership groups. The Team solicits feedback through community-wide discussions, surveys, etc. to help ensure future software releases address the needs of the community.
