Dear PCC colleagues,
The PCC Chair sends an update to the PCC membership at the end of each quarter (November/December, February, May and August). This is the latest in that series.
These are some of the things that have been happening during the last three months:
- The PCC held its summer Participants Meetings on June 30, 2024 (at ALA Annual) and July 18, 2024 (virtual). We heard about Official RDA updates, SACO projects, and the final report of the Task Group on Strategic Planning for AI and Machine Learning for Cataloging and Metadata. We also celebrated the PCC’s 30th anniversary! Many thanks to all speakers and attendees.
- The recording of the meetings are available on the PCC website.
- The PCC Task Group on Organization of PCC Documentation was charged on June 10, 2024. This group will carry forward recommendations made by the Documentation Survey Task Group. That group’s final report outlined numerous recommendations for how to improve the information-seeking experience for users of PCC documentation. This new task group will address a portion of those recommendations. A separate task group, focused on the recommendations of the Documentation Survey Task Group that pertain to modality, formatting, usability and accessibility of individual PCC documentation resources, will be formed at a future date.
- The PCC Task Group on AI and Machine Learning for Cataloging and Metadata is charged effective September 3, 2024. This group will: compose and distribute a statement of principles on the use of AI and Machine Learning technologies in cataloging and metadata work; establish a community of practice for catalogers interested in sharing knowledge and experimenting with AI; collaborate with NARDAC, ALA, the Library of Congress, the Advisory Committee on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Accessibility (EDIBA), and other primary stakeholders in the development of cataloging standards and platforms; and further tasks.
- The SCS Task Group on Accessibility Information in Provider Neutral Records submitted its Final Report on July 11, 2024. Their primary recommendation was that the P-N standard be changed to permit a single provider-neutral record to include accessibility content that may be the same or vary across different provider platforms. This should be limited to describing expressions that differ only in accessibility information. The accessibility content must be pre-generated and thus a component part of the aggregate expression of the resource. Such expressions differing only in accessibility content may be represented by a single provider-neutral record. An updated version of the P-N standard reflecting this change is forthcoming.
- The Standing Committee on Standards (SCS) is in the process of charging the SCS Task Group on Provider Neutral MARC Record Guidelines for Electronic Monographs in Official RDA.
- The PCC is convening a hybrid Linked Data Tactical Planning Meeting on November 6, 2024 (in conjunction with the annual Policy Committee meeting). Its attendees will be a broad cross-section of stakeholders in the development of Linked Data-based tools, infrastructure and policies. The agenda for this closed meeting will be posted when it becomes available. A summary of the meeting's outcomes (focused on action items for the coming two years) will be made available after the meeting.
- The SCS Task Group on Evaluation Guidelines for Non-Latin References in NARs presented a webinar on their recommendations on June 20, 2024. The presentation slides and recording are available on the PCC Wiki.
- The PCC Steering Committee shared a new framework for PCC programming, membership, and other operations with the broader PCC community on August 26, 2024. A new permanent committee, the Standing Committee on Membership and Programming, and the synchronous programming it will coordinate on an ongoing basis will supersede the PCC Operations Committee (OpCo) as it is currently defined in the PCC Governance Document. During the upcoming transitional year, all programming (except that which is held during the ALA Annual Conference in June 2025) will be virtual.
- The PCC Chairs added a new resource to the PCC Wiki: Combined directory of PCC groups (currently including data from 2019-present). This will facilitate the ongoing communication between past and current task group and committee members, as well as serve as an assessment tool for PCC group membership over time.
- Official RDA updates
- The Phase 1 training modules are available on the Catalogers Learning Workshop. The series of webinars that focus on these modules has concluded, and recordings are available.
- Phase 2 training modules are in development.
- BIBCO Standard Record (BSR) and CONSER Standard Record (CSR) metadata application profiles for use with Official RDA are in active development.
- The Standing Committee on Training (SCT) is in the process of charging the Task Group on Official RDA Training: Name Authorities.
I am eternally grateful to all members of the PCC community for your sustained engagement with and contributions to our metadata sharing programs and our numerous strategic initiatives. We accomplish as much as we do because of you!
Best regards,
Casey (on behalf of the PCC Policy Committee)
