Dear PCC colleagues,
The PCC Chair sends an update to the PCC membership at the end of each quarter (November/December, February, May and August). This is the latest in that series.
These are some of the things that have been happening during the last three months:
- The PCC held its winter Participants Meeting on February 15, 2024, where we heard presentations by Adam Baron on PCC’s Official RDA implementation progress and by Crystal Yragui and Jennifer Liss (co-chairs of the Identity Management Advisory Committee) on IMAC’s proposal for a new PCC program called “EMCO” (Entity Management Cooperative). A special thank you to our presenters!
- The recording of the Participants Meeting is available on the PCC Calendar
- Please view upcoming PCC events on the PCC Calendar webpage. Mark your calendars and join us!
- PCC At-Large Virtual Forum on March 28, 2024, 1:00-2:30 pm (Eastern)
- This is a pilot for a new style of virtual meeting for the PCC. Topics and presentations are to be suggested by the membership. Please watch for an invitation to submit your ideas soon!
- OCLC will hold two Virtual AskQC Office Hours on April 9 and April 18, 2024 entitled “PCC and OCLC: review and what’s new.” At these sessions, representatives from the PCC and OCLC will engage the OCLC cataloging/metadata community in a discussion about working with BIBCO records. They will also give an overview on ways to participate in PCC programs, how to find documentation, and exciting changes in the works that are of interest to the broader community.
- PCC Operations Committee Meeting (Hybrid) on May 2-3, 2024.
- For those who will be attending virtually: You will not need to register in advance. A link to join the meeting will be sent to the PCC discussion lists and posted on the PCC Calendar page closer to the meeting date.
- For those who would like to attend the meeting in person: A link to register for the meeting will be sent to the PCC discussion lists on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 1:00 pm Eastern Time. Because of space limitations in the assigned meeting room, we must restrict the number of registered in-person attendees. We will be reserving seats for our invited speakers and for those PCC Operations Committee representatives receiving the partial travel reimbursement outlined in the PCC Governance Document. A limited number of additional registered in-person PCC attendees will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. We ask that no more than two additional persons from the same institution register to attend the meeting in-person.
- PCC At-Large Virtual Forum on March 28, 2024, 1:00-2:30 pm (Eastern)
- SCS Task Group on Developing Guidelines for Using ISO 639-3 Language Codes for Library Cataloging issued its Final Report on November 15, 2023. PoCo discussed and accepted their report in January. The task group has completed their work and is now discharged with the thanks of the PCC.
- The Documentation Survey Task Group issued its Final Report on October 23, 2023. PoCo discussed and accepted their report in January. The task group’s recommendations include forming two future groups to address navigation of documentation on PCC online presences and to address modality, formatting, usability and accessibility of individual PCC documentation resources, respectively. The task group has completed their work and is now discharged with the thanks of the PCC.
- The SCS Task Group on Accessibility Information in Provider Neutral Records submitted its Preliminary Report on December 5, 2023. A majority of the task group favored exploring options for modifying the Provider-Neutral Guidelines to permit a single record for multiple expressions differing only in accessibility information. Based on this, they will begin examining specifics of how this could be implemented and the implications.
- The Task Group on Strategic Planning for AI and Machine Learning was charged on December 14, 2023. This group will conduct an environmental scan on the impact of AI and machine learning on library metadata operations, and provide evidence about potential directions for PCC.
- The SCS Task Group on CONSER Policies for Official RDA in MARC was charged on January 15, 2024. This group continues the work of the prior SCS Pilot Group on CONSER Policies, with a narrower focus on policy issues in an Official RDA and MARC environment.
- The Standing Committee on Standards issued a new FAQ: Cataloging of Resources Generated Using Artificial Intelligence (AI) Software on February 8, 2024.
- Official RDA updates
- The Working Group on Metadata Application Profiles is preparing a draft application profile for the BIBCO Standard Record that is intended for use in an Official RDA environment. This draft is expected to be ready for community review later this spring.
- The Standing Committee on Training RDA Training Task Group: Monographs is planning a series of webinars this spring (March 13-May 15) to describe the Phase 1 training modules in detail. Register for the webinars here. All webinars will be recorded and the recordings will be posted on this page.
- For more detailed updates on PCC’s Official RDA implementation plans, please watch for future issues of the RDA Bulletin prepared by the RDA Communications Committee.
I am eternally grateful to all members of the PCC community for your sustained engagement with and contributions to our metadata sharing programs and our numerous strategic initiatives. We accomplish as much as we do because of you!
Best regards,
Casey (on behalf of the PCC Policy Committee)
