Dear PCC colleagues,

The PCC Chair sends an update to the PCC membership at the end of each quarter (November/December, February, May and August). This is the latest in that series.

These are some of the things that have been happening during the last three months:

  1. The PCC Policy Committee (PoCo) hybrid Annual Meeting was held at the Library of Congress from November 2-3, 2023. The outcomes document, just posted, includes a link to the agenda which has further links to reports and slide shows from the meeting.
  2. Please view upcoming PCC events on the PCC Calendar webpage. Mark your calendars and join us!
    1. PCC Participants' Meeting (Virtual) on February 15, 2024, 1:00-2:30 pm (Eastern)
    2. PCC At-Large Virtual Forum on March 28, 2024, 1:00-2:30 pm (Eastern)
    3. PCC Operations Committee Meeting (Hybrid) on May 2-3, 2024
  3. OCLC will hold two Virtual AskQC Office Hours on April 9 and April 18, 2024 entitled “PCC and OCLC: review and what’s new.” At these sessions, representatives from the PCC and OCLC will engage the OCLC cataloging/metadata community in a discussion about working with BIBCO records. They will also give an overview on ways to participate in PCC programs, how to find documentation, and exciting changes in the works that are of interest to the broader community.
  4. The SCS Task Group on Accessibility Information in Provider Neutral Records was charged on September 5, 2023.
  5. The PCC Consultation Group for Library Systems and Vendors was charged on October 2, 2023. This long term group will allow for more robust reciprocal communication between the PCC community and vendors, i.e., the organizations who develop software that supports metadata functionality and/or produce metadata for libraries (this includes both for-profit companies and not-for-profit organizations).
  6. The SCS Task Group on Privacy in Name Authority Records was charged on November 1, 2023. This group will identify guiding principles for privacy of information relating to persons and families in NARs and for critical evaluation of sources of information, building on the PCC Position Statement on Personal Data in Name Authority Records, and will develop and compile best practices based on these principles, on a general or field-by-field basis.
  7. The Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ACDEI) has updated its charge and changed its name to the Advisory Committee on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Accessibility (EDIBA).
  8. As a follow up to its Final Report issued in December 2022, the Task Group on Required Contributions to the PCC submitted a set of implementation recommendations to PoCo, and PoCo approved them on December 1, 2023. The Task Group has completed their work and is now discharged with the thanks of the PCC.
  9. Newly available on the PCC Wiki is a set of Quick Start Onboarding Guides. These pages are intended to serve as an orientation guide for new and prospective members of the PCC administrative structure, which includes all members, chairs and liaisons of committees and task groups.
  10. Official RDA updates
    1. The Task Group to Test the Official RDA Toolkit issued its Final Report, which includes detailed results of the Test carried out in 2022-2023. PoCo accepted the recommendations in the final report and discharged the group on November 17, 2023.
    2. The PCC RDA Implementation Task Group was charged on November 9, 2023. The PCC Policy Committee has decided that the PCC will have a rolling implementation of Official RDA from May 1, 2024 to April 30, 2027. This multiyear group will develop and assess these implementation plans; track the work of other PCC groups working on policies and metadata guidance documentation related to Official RDA; and, identify and address barriers to implementation raised in the PCC Test of the Official RDA Toolkit and elsewhere.
    3. The forthcoming issue of the RDA Bulletin, issued by the RDA Communications Committee, will recap and expand upon these news items.

I am eternally grateful to all members of the PCC community for your sustained engagement with and contributions to our metadata sharing programs, and to our numerous strategic initiatives. We accomplish as much as we do because of you!

Best regards,

Casey (on behalf of the PCC Policy Committee)
