Dear PCC colleagues,

This is the third in a series of news updates to the PCC members from the PCC chair in this fiscal year. The Chair sends an update to the PCC list at the end of each quarter (November, February, May and August).

These are some of the things that have been happening during the last three months:

  1. PoCo is very pleased to announce that the PCC has a new wiki space at Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) Home. You will need to sign up for a Confluence account if you don’t already have one. The page is still under development but we will be adding individual child pages for the various committees as well as documentation to this wiki. We hope this helps the PCC members to readily find information they need.
    1. Please note that the PCC already had 2 other wiki pages set up and these cannot be readily moved. Therefore, we will add links to them from our home page instead. These 2 pages are: PCC ISNI Pilot Home and PCC Identity Management Home
  2. In the past the three Standing Committees of the PCC (Standing Committee on Training, Standing Committee on Standards, and Standing Committee on Applications) would be reviewed every three years. We will continue to do that. However, we have also decided that our Advisory Committees (Advisory Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Linked Data Advisory Committee) will also be reviewed every three years. PoCo updated the document: Periodic Reviews of PCC Standing Committees and Advisory Committees. For a list of recently reviewed committees and when committees will be reviewed in the near future see our wiki page at: Standing committees and advisory committees reviewed recently
  3. Regarding the BABEL task group which conducted a test of using ISO 639-3 that allows for more granular language codes, the Standing Committee on Standards has formed a new task group to write up documentation on guidelines for applying ISO 639-3 in PCC records.
  4. PoCo voted to continue to use 040 $e rda in bib records for records created using the original Toolkit or the Official Toolkit. In other words, we are not going to distinguish between which version of RDA we used when creating a PCC bibliographic record. There will be more information in the near future about how using the Official Toolkit will affect our authority records.
  5. PoCo voted to approve a new PCC Open Metadata Policy
  6. The Standing Committee on Standards  prepared a discussion paper for MAC on making $1 available in the 720 and 653 fields. This would allow us to provide uris for wikidata or other sources of entities in these fields, which would be very helpful for identity management.
  7. Revised Report on Recording Gender in Personal Name Authority Records was prepared by the DEIAC and approved by PoCo. The decision was made to immediately stop recording gender in the 375 in all PCC authority records. The PCC is also investigating removing this data from PCC authority records retrospectively.
  8. PoCo set up a Task Group to Test the Official RDA Toolkit. The group will report back to PoCo next fall. This important work will help inform both PCC policy and how we will provide training for the Official RDA Toolkit.
  9. PoCo voted to approve the terms of reference for the new BIBFRAME Interoperability Group:  BIG TOR
  10. The PCC Operations Committee (OpCo) meeting was held virtually May 5-6. Here is the Agenda. The sessions were recorded.

Peace,

Isabel (on behalf of the PCC Policy Committee)
