Discovery (WP3)

  • https://github.com/LD4P/discovery/projects/2 for issues etc.
  • Research: how to go from knowledge graph to an index
  • BANG! (Bibliographic Aspects Newly GUI'd)
    • 2022-09-29
      • Stay tuned tomorrow!
  • BAM! WOW! (Browsing Across Music With Obtainable Wikidata)
    • 2022-09-29
      • Met with Tracey and Kevin (Stanford) to discuss thematic catalogs and Wikidata. Notes:

        https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rYz48f-vRW-DPg_3xu33uxp0F_gVFpnYtgX0j0pE-u8/edit

        • Takeaways:
          • Useful to display music catalog codes and cross-references for musical works. Can start with use cases in document.  Additional area of interest is translations (Stravinsky works use Russian uniform titles while many will try to search with French and English titles first and then go to Russian).
          • Considering interviewing or talking with music students to better understand which use cases might be of interest
          • Asked if order within the catalog matters but it didn't seem to. We're still curious
          • Order of thematic  catalog might be important (i.e. we may want to show code from a particular catalog first)
            • Simeon: Could identify which thematic catalogs are of interest in our prototype and start there
      • Knowledge panels: Could use that as a pattern to bring in more info about works, or use the BANG! pattern with a dedicated work page.  Could try both of those out.
      • Searching by catalog code? Simeon: Would need a fielded search to be effective.
        • Currently, thinking this may need more work to define how this (areas of concern:
  • DAG Calls
    • 2022-09-22: Next week will have crossover with Wikidata Affinity Group where they talk about their engagement strategies and what they have learned so far from their sessions regarding GLAM interests
    • 2022-09-29: We had that crossover! It was great! We should all learn from the Wikidata Affinity Group (Notes). What are we doing next time? We don't know.  Unless FOLIO authorities are ready? or FOLIO + discovery?

Linked-Data Authority Support (WP2)

  • Qa Sinopia Collaboration - Meetings with Stanford will only occur on an as needed basis. Authority request issues: https://github.com/LD4P/qa_server/projects/1 (prioritized based on "important" authorities and ease of completion)
    • 2022-09-15
    • 2022-09-22
      • Have workflow going so that we can get new authority files into the app, but all fetch links are broken. Looks like this isn't a problem with the app but with the services that Dave runs – the services that the app hits return errors. Steven notes that some fetches work but not new vocabulary so maybe a config issue. Steven will document as qa_server issue: https://github.com/cul-it/qa_server_aws_deploy/issues/34
    • 2022-09-29
  • Best Practices for Authoritative Data working group (focus on Change Management)
    • 2022-09-29 - Met on Monday, Entity Metadata Collections → Entity Sets, Notifications → Activities, discussion of order, pagination and dates
  • Containerizing the QaServer - DONE
    • 2022-08-04 Greg digging in to terraform as a potential replacement for cloudformation, not ready to move yet!
    • 2022-09-15 Still exploring, have only tried baby steps so far. Need to focus on current system first
  • Containerizing the Cache Indices
    • 2022-07-21 : No progress. Have not heard anything from Dave; Jason will ask him at Monday's PI meeting to respond to Greg
    • 2022-08-04 There wasn't a PIs meeting so haven't yet checked with Dave

Other Topics

  • Catalogers working on LD4P effort(s), namely around music
    • 2022-08-12 Jason discussed cataloging work with Tracey and she is confident that they will have data by the end of 2022, they are going to focus on Vivaldi. MLA folks on wikidata project feel comfortable with that timeline. Will check in again in October
  • POD & SHARE-VDE... should this team interact with that re: use cases, data analysis or other?
    • 2022-09-15: Tech services reps from Columbia, Cornell, Penn, Stanford and Yale met to outline work. Will be acclimating ourselves to both SVDE and POD in coming weeks; once we better understand the state of things, will better define use cases. Casalini expects it to take a few months to set up the SVDE instance for POD.
  • Sinolio - Sinopia-FOLIO
    • Possibly next work cycle toward end 2022
  • Entity Management in FOLIO
  • Authorities in FOLIO
    • 2022-09-15 Workflow is in production; continuing to tweak reporting based on Mary Campany's experience with existing reports, particularly around diacritics
    • Began thinking about URIs in MARC again. Getting reacquainted with possible workflows, matching, tooling. Do we building tooling outside of FOLIO (e.g. using Frances' index)? Do we try to leverage FOLIO tools? How much can we opt to receive through OCLC exports? How do we protect them once in the record? Can we then rely on them for at least some heading maintenance?
  • BIBFRAME Interoperability Group (BIG) - Steven Cornell rep and Jason alternate

Upcoming meetings/presentations

  • "Linked Data Summit" and LD4P Fall meeting and Interoperability meeting, DC, November 7-9  at LC
    • Linked Data Summit, Mon 7 + Tue 8 Nov (likely mostly in person, possibly presentations hybrid)
      • Discovery Use Cases leveraging linked data
    • LD4P Fall meeting, Wed 9 Nov, 9am-4pm (hybrid)
    • Attendance plans: Huda & Steven in person 3 days, Greg probably in person for Wed 9.
  • SWIB (virtual) - https://swib.org/swib22/. Nov 28 - Dec 2
    • Data provenance and transparency in UI
