Dear PCC colleagues,
This is the fourth in a series of news updates to the PCC members from the PCC chair in this fiscal year. The Chair sends an update to the PCC list at the end of each quarter (November, February, May and August).
These are some of the things that have been happening during the last three months:
- First I’m very pleased to announce that OCLC has generously agreed to double their contribution to the PCC this year to enable us to hold a facilitated session on our next PCC Strategic Directions. OCLC provides the PCC with funds every year to help facilitate our work. I’m extremely grateful for their many contributions to the PCC, including this special funding to allow us to best position ourselves for the future. Please join me in thanking OCLC for their generosity.
- PoCo is pleased to announce that the FAST SACO Funnel is now operational. “The priority for the funnel is to prepare and submit SACO proposals on behalf of the FAST user community. The funnel will particularly benefit those FAST users who do not use or are unfamiliar with Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).”A FAST Quick Start Guide has been created by FPOC: “The FAST Quick Start Guide is intended to give you answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about FAST and offer instructions for getting up and running with FAST in any environment. It is intended for practitioners, administrators/managers, and anyone else who may be curious about why and how to use FAST as their subject vocabulary.”
- Please also note that the British Library has announced the decision to use FAST as their primary subject indexing standard.
- One can find training documentation at: PCC Standing Committee on Training - FAST Training
- PoCo has a new Advisory Committee, the Identity Management Advisory Committee. In short this committee is charged to “advise the PCC on general and specific issues relating to identity management and the new roles identifiers can and are playing in the information ecosphere.” The full charge and list of current members is available at the link which leads to the PCC website.
- PoCo approved the following endorsement of the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group:
- In order to foster the PCC strategic directions SD1 (more diverse, inclusive, broader scope) and SD4 (accelerated movement toward identifier creation & identity management) and to sustain the momentum attained by participants in the recent PCC-sponsored Wikidata Pilot, the PCC Policy Committee therefore endorses the LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group as an important venue for Pilot participants and interested others to continue working in community for presentations and regular skill-building meetings. Pilot participants had noted the need for regular meetings and the Identity Management Task Group is attempting to meet that expressed need by this endorsement. The LD4 Wikidata Affinity Group is an open, community-driven effort with PCC and non-PCC members as active participants and regular presenters. PCC members wishing to take on a leadership role to foster Wikidata work in libraries are encouraged to participate in the organizing group.
- PoCo approved revised Guidelines for the Nominating Committee and for PCC Liaisons. The changes can be found in our current PCC Governance Document. PoCo also approved revised Guidelines/Responsiblity of PCC Advisory Committees.
- PoCo set up a new Task Group on Required Contributions to the PCC to review our current requirement for PCC membership and make recommendations for changes.
- The PCC Standing Committee on Standards task group on a PCC Entities Vocabulary issued its final report: Task Group on Developing a PCC Entities Vocabulary: Final Report Please note that these guidelines cannot and should not be implemented yet, as we are requesting codes to identify these entities. We will send an announcement to the PCC list once the guidelines in this report are ready to be implemented.
- The PCC Standing Committee on Standards also charged a new Task Group on Developing Guidelines for Using ISO 639-3 Language Codes for Library Cataloging.
- The PoCo Task Group on MARC Simplification for BIBFRAME Conversion issued its Interim Report.
- The PCC Standing Committee on Applications issued a Wikibase Exploration Survey Report and PoCo has asked for additional input from the PCC community regarding possible use cases for a PCC Wikibase instance. PoCo and SCA are still soliciting input from the community on use cases. So please write to me, or the PCC list, with your thoughts on this.
- The PCC Standing Committee on Applications also formed a new task group to review practices in MARC bibliographic records in light of enhanced metadata and linked data. This topic was one of the strategic directions for the PCC. The charge is here: Task Group on Enhancing Metadata and Practices in MARC Bibliographic Records.
- The PCC Participants’ Meeting was held in person at ALA Annual in Washington DC on June 26, 2022. The agenda with links to the slides is available here: ALA Annual, 2022. The main topic of discussion was to gather input on what the PCC community wants PoCo to focus on as we set our new strategic directions to cover the next five years. Many thanks to all who were able to attend for their wonderful input. We are currently soliciting further input from the PCC Standing and Advisory Committees. We will then synthesize all the feedback and share it with PCC community, along with a mechanism for those who were not able to attend in person, or who have further thoughts to add your input as well.
- The SVDE PCC data pool is available in a beta version. The beta version of the PCC data pool is now available in SVDE at https://pcc-lod.org. The PCC is currently setting up a task group to review and test the beta version PCC data pool, and provide critical feedback to Casalini.
- The PCC set up a new PCC Task Group on Gender to come up with best practices and guidelines for the use of gender in PCC metadata in both authority and bibliographic records.\
- The PCC is sponsoring the BIBFRAME Interoperability Group (BIG). This group is charged to “Work collaboratively on the development and maintenance of interoperable BIBFRAME data guidelines to support production level implementation, to address issues restricting interoperability, and to inform development of associated toolings and infrastructure.” There is more information at their PCC Wiki page BIBFRAME Interoperability Group (BIG)
This is my last quarterly update at PCC Chair. I’ve been so impressed with all the work that PoCo and the PCC Standing Committees, Advisory Committees, and Task Groups have accomplished this past year. My deepest thanks to all of you for your active participation in the PCC. You make this cooperative successful!
Peace,
Isabel (on behalf of the PCC Policy Committee)
