Kindle does it like this:

  • No progress info when user is reading (so as not to clutter the space)
  • User taps the preview mode to see:
    • scrollable page thumbnails with page number at the bottom
    • an overall progress bar, "Loc 937 of 4956, "18%"
  • No labels
