Sally is a student and has an account on her university's external authentication system. In order to submit her thesis to DSpace, she needs to be authenticated on the system. Therefore, she clicks the "Login" button in the side navigation in DSpace, and is redirected to her university's external authentication system. She can sign-in to DSpace with the credentials she uses for other of the university's applications as well.

When successfully logged in, she is automatically granted the correct permissions based on the information returned by the external authentication system. As such, she can now submit her thesis in the repositorySteve logs in to his institutions central login system. This allows him to acces all content stored in repositories of institutions affiliated with his. He does not have to be authenticated again and has the suited authorisation when he wants to consult the article he needed, which is stored in one of such repositories.
