Sandy was the founding CEO of DuraSpace and the Fedora Commons not-for-profit organizations (2007-2011).  In August 2011 she returned to Cornell University to pursue doctoral study leading to a PhD at the intersection of the disciplines of Communication, Information Science, and Science & Technology Studies.   As CEO she collaborated nationally and internationally to further the mission of DuraSpace to enable the sharing, preservation, and archiving of digital information. Sandy was the original creator of the Flexible Extensible Digital Object Repository Architecture (Fedora) at Cornell University's Department of Computer Science (1998) and she later established the open source Fedora Repository Project
