**This page is in progress**

During the course of our everyday work, we occasionally find problematic headings and class numbers. "Problematic" in this instance can mean a full spectrum of issues, from "this heading is lacking a useful UF" to "this caption is incorrect" to "this heading has offensive terminology." Frequently, we lack the time or expertise to create proposals for these issues in the moment; still, we don't want them to be forgotten. We would encourage SACO members to list problematic headings and class numbers here. This page can be used for tracking the problems we find, and it can function as a sign-up sheet for those funnels and institutions that have the capacity and knowledge required to take on revisions.

A few caveats:

...

Please note: This page is meant to track singular headings or classes, or small groupings/ranges of headings or classes (totaling 20 or less changes). If you have large groupings or headings, or extensive classification ranges, that would result in 20 or more changes, please do not list

...

them here. Instead, list the project details on the Projects Hub where SACO members can volunteer to assist.

...

Changes of that scope are more time intensive, and require additional planning and scheduling. PTCP reserves the right to

...

redefine problem headings

...

listed here as projects, depending on time and resources available.

Instructions

Please use the table below to track problematic headings and class numbers found in LCDGT, LCGFT, LCMPT, or LCSH.

...

To add a heading, please fill in the table with the following information:

  • Heading Base heading and/or Class number: List the full heading or class number. If there are multiple related headings/numbers, please use a separate row for each(s):
    • Add a single or small range of class numbers per line.
    • For headings, record the base heading only, i.e., the 1XX $a. If the heading is also established in the authority file with additional subfields appended, add the qualifier (plus # additional headings). For example, if you wanted to change the heading Knitting machines, which would then necessitate changes to Knitting machines–Electric driving and Knitting machines–needles, you would record Knitting machines (plus 2 additional headings).
    • Remember, if your range or base heading grouping adds up to more than 20, it should be considered a project.
  • Problem: Add a brief description of the problem, or problem areas. This could be things like "offensive terminology" or "scope note needs revision."
  • Vocabulary: List the vocabulary where the heading is found.
  • Date Added: Please record the date in MM/DD/YY format.

...

  • Funnel/Institution: List the funnel or SACO institution willing to coordinate the work.
  • Contact Point: Please list a name or funnel (for institutions) and a contact email.

If you would like to work on revising an issue already claimed by another Funnel funnel or SACO Institutioninstitution, please contact the individual or group listed as the Contact Point.

As problems are resolved, they will be removed from the list.
