Notes
State of Fedora 6 Development
Committers
- Most of the work comes from the committers
- It would be great to expand the committer team - currently rely on a relatively small team
Upcoming sprint
- Coming up next week
- We have removed ModeShape and implemented OCFL
- Reading and writing resources through the API to OCFL in a basic way
- Focus on containment hierarchy
- Close to being able to view resources migrated from Fedora 3 into Fedora 6
- Another 2 week sprint in Q1 2020 (e.g. March) would be ideal
- What is the expected delivery date for Fedora 6?
- Need to set a goal in order to support a request for resources
- Discuss at next Steering call
- We should have a list of remaining objectives and rough estimates for resource/sprint requirements to complete
- This would be useful to have as part of our membership messaging as well
- We have no intention of releasing Fedora 6 prematurely - community testing of the beta version is essential
- Migration-utils is testable now; an initial Fedora 6 build is also testable now
- How will Fedora 4/5 to Fedora 6 migrations work?
- Import-export tool rather than migration-utils
- API-based export/import rather than transforming to OCFL on disk, but if this is impractical due to scale issues we could make it possible to transform exported Fedora 4/5 content to OCFL on disk
- Migration-utils can also read from Fedora 4, which could also allow for the on-disk transformation to OCFL rather than an API import
Fedora 6 communications
- Short sprint summary videos
- Fedora 6 overview
- Steady communication as development progresses
- Link to videos on the roadmap page
- Communications subgroup suggested collecting testimonials, particularly from pilot partners
Leadership updates
Product technology subgroup
- Working on a Fedora 6 test plan
- Input from technical team (and Leaders) would be helpful
- Looking through the use cases relative to the test plan would be helpful
- Reviewed some of the performance and scale testing plans from Fedora 4 for comparison
- Also need to ensure good performance/scale in cloud deployments
- Functional tests should be done first, followed by performance and scale
- Need to categorize tests, identify which tests should be done by the tech team in advance of tests to be conducted by the community
- Need to gather test fixtures that represent different use cases (multiple versions, many files, etc.)
Governance subgroup
- Biggest issue facing the community right now is attrition (amongst users and members)
- Michele conducting a membership analysis for the group
- Governance is not widely representative of global user base
- Planning to go through the report and brainstorm some ideas for implementing the recommendations
Action Items
- David Wilcox add Fedora 6 delivery timeline topic to Feb. 4 Steering meeting
- Andrew Woods Danny Bernstein make a list of Fedora 6 development priorities with estimates on resource requirements (ideally before Feb. 4 Steering meeting)
