Discovery (WP3)

  • https://github.com/LD4P/discovery/projects/2 for issues etc.
  • Draft of a discovery plan: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zKYW7FQVVNvyd0XjjW0qWznX9PC3jbmOE6Kz_yygPjs/edit?usp=sharing
  • Research: how to go from knowledge graph to an index
  • DASH! (Displaying Authorities Seamlessly Here)
    • Dashboard design meeting kickoff notes
    • https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PgQi3xobsPhr9DUHU_YGeimL1OjNiiTdkiNWb36r3Gg/edit
    • Usability testing and followup for DASH: Usability results
    • 2021-10-2229
      • Huda and Tim working on adding the parts that user reps wanted to move forward with, also adding YAML file to control exceptions where data should not be added
      • Tim working on author and subject page layout/display
      • Expect to demo to user reps next Thursday
      • Issue to record work: https://github.com/LD4P/discovery/issues/158
      • User reps comfortable to add only photograph and biographical representation, and library holdings section. Working on this now to get a prototype branch ready for the November D&A sprint, review next Thursday. Now have author page (without timeline) and knowledge panel with wikidata image and description. Huda and Tim will continue to work on this. Will have means for override in specific cases where the data is bad
      • Jason notes plans for getting more URIs in MARC. Steven notes work ongoing to do this and question of getting this into the Solr index, might need to discuss with Frances
      • Need to cope gracefully with external data sources being unavailable
      • Still need to work on finishing documentation and set up a demo. Can tell whole story of experimentation, usability tests, review from D&A user reps and scaled back production version
  • BANG! (Bibliographic Aspects Newly GUI'd)
    • Jamboard link
    • Expect to include Works. Need to do something beyond what we already have live from the OCLC concordance data.
    • 2021-10-22 29 - No work on BANG this last week, focus on DASH. Steven notes possible IMDB data use via LC->Wikidata→IMDB and embedded data in HTML pages (API is for fee)
  • DAG Calls
    • 2021-10-22 - Amy on call next Tuesday, after that only a couple of calls left this year29 - Amy presented, talking about image use in general as well as with IIIF. Discussion of linked data and availability fo context. 11-12 people attended, with a regular core

Linked-Data Authority Support (WP2)

  • Qa Sinopia Collaboration – Support and evolve QA+cache instance for use with Sinopia
  • Best Practices for Authoritative Data working group (focus on Change Management)
    • 2021-10-29
      • Need a LD4 repo to hold context document.  Name: ld4/entity_metadata_management -- Entity Metadata Management
      • Looking at using github.io for the final documentation.
      • Considering rewriting the document in a format similar to the IIIF document.  It seems easier to read.
  • Cache Containerization Plan - Develop a sustainable solution that others can deploy
    • 2021-10-2229
      • The plan for moving the containerization process forward state so far is...
        • DONE - Lynette will clean up the images in ECR
        • PARTIALLY DONE - Lynette will get the github-actions deploying images.
          • DONE for the private repos.
          • IN PROCESS DONE - Still working on the public repo.  I believe I have a solution but need to test it.
        • IN PROCESS - Lynette will update the env file to allow for initializers to draw their values from that file.
        • IN PROCESS - Greg can walk Lynette through setting up -int.  This should identify…
          • what can be done by a moderate privileged user and what has to be done by a sys opts user
          • make changes/additions to documentation as needed
          • Greg identified a way to make the copy authorities to EFS mount  a process of copying to S3  and then it will automatically copy to EFS
          • Other potential customizations described in Issue #44
        • Lynette will move the templates to a new github repo
        • Lynette will setup -stg except where sys opts privileges are required to proceed.
      • Greg working in on setting up different parts in public and private repos
      • Can containerized QA be available for testing before Stanford Sinopia work cycle finishes Dec 10? Think so. Lynette will reach out to Michelle to see what expectations are

Other Topics

  • Sinolio - Sinopia-FOLIO
    • 2021-10-22: Have not worked on the FOLIO tasks yet. Monday is the next sprint kick-off... and I am told that this sprint will have more FOLIO work.
  • OCLC Linked Data / Entities Advisory Group
    • 2021-10-22: There was a meeting this week. Libraries were invited to share their reactions to the work. Most folks mentioned it shows promise, and they look forward to being able to interact with it as an editor. The editor work should be shareable in November. Unlike VIAF (with is strictly machine generated), the entity data will be both batch created AND able to be edited by catalogers. Local Authorities could be a good use case. There were some discussions about integration with other tools (Sinopia, etc.)
  • PCC 2021-10-15: Task Group on Non-RDA Entities - slight change in how POCO expects this vocab to be implemented, which effects some of the examples. Once done, will work with Kevin on specific issues converting to RDF
    • 2021-10-22 Some work to encode non-RDA examples in MARC, will be sent to LC for review
    • 2021-10-27 Definitions and examples continued to shift, but should be able to finalize the spreadsheet that generates the RDF today.
  • Authorities in FOLIO
    • 2021-10-15 Frances has database she is using for discovery. She has begun to successfully parse weekly Peter Ward files and updating her database. will then test whether that database can serve as source. Meeting every-other-week. Nick is investigating creating a GUI rather than spreadsheets; question about how much to invest, given that this would be a local solution and no other libraries are identified yet to do work this way.
    • 2021-10-22 Next meeting on Monday29 Met this week, Frances thinking about data model for activities/events in order to support GUI. Steven watching possible shift in goals from spreadsheets to app development and how that might affect timeline

Upcoming meetings

  • https://kula.uvic.ca/index.php/kula/announcement/view/1 .  Call for Proposals - Special Issue: "The Metadata Issue: Metadata as Knowledge".
  • WikidataCon; suggested we present Activity Streams in that. Lynette will reach out to Lydia to see whether good fit. Happening sometime around 10/30.
  • SWIB (11/29-12/3) virtual again this year - No proposals submitted
  • Virtual Blacklight Summit in 8-10 November. Last year had an institutional update from Cornell; can do this again. And/or can propose a session on the LD4P discovery work. Informal CFP has gone out.
    • Huda Khan has filled out form to offer institutional demo and possibly demo work. Meeting with Melissa after this call as they did it last year. 5-6 minutes total
    • Demo videos due by 11/3 - Huda and Melissa have worked on the video, including mention of the Discogs work from LD4P

Next Meeting(s), anyone out?:

  • 2021-11-05 Guy Fawkes day,  nobody out
