IMLS Grant Update: Fedora Migration Paths and Tools
David and team This grant (lg-246264-ols-20) is focused on developing, piloting, and documenting migration tools and paths for upgrading Fedora 3 repositories to Fedora 6. Fedora staff and the grant partners have been working hard on this project and are pleased to share the following updates:
- Established We established a spreadsheet of functional requirements for the Whitman College pilot Includes
- that includes priorities, solutions, and timelines
- Scoped We scoped and produced an initial design for a migration validation tool
- Ran We ran migration tests for UVA the University of Virginia pilot using sample data from their legacy Fedora 3 repository Encountered
- . We encountered and documented several issues to be shared as part of a case studyDocumented UVA data models and metadata standards

Fedora 6 Progress
With only a few months left before the end of the year we have been working fast and furious toward continuing monthly community sprints, targeting a potential Fedora 6 Beta release before year end. A Fedora sprint took place October 5-9If you are interested in the upcoming Fedora release and would like to help with testing, documenting, and/or developing Fedora, please join an upcoming sprint.
The outcomes of October's sprint include:
- Migration tooling completed for F4 & F5 → F6
- Native S3 Support is now available
- Support now exists for DirectContainers
- Versions/Mementos are now displayed and can be created in the UI

- Alignment with Fedora API Specification: 93% complete93% of “Must Have” API features are in alignment
With all of this progress, the hope is that following our first November sprint (Nov 2-6) we will be able to release the alpha version of Fedora 6 for testing.
Requirements for alpha release are as follows:
- All/mostly Mostly feature complete = ✓
- Migration tooling for F3,F4,F4, F5 -> F6 = ✓
- Documentation required for the following:
- Documented API compliance of Alpha
- Documented missing features of Alpha
- Documented breaking changes of Alpha
- Documented upgrade process of Alpha
