MESSAGE FROM THE CEO (Debra)

As we approach the holidays DuraSpace will conclude work on our strategic plan. As part of the process we have conducted internal and external assessments to position ourselves and you, our community, to meet the challenges in preserving and making accessible our collective digital memory. As we are all aware the digital scholarly research landscape is affected by political, social and technical changes. Our strategic plan aims to evolve the DuraSpace business model to keep pace.

2016 Membership update (Val)

Many thanks to our members who have already renewed their membership for 2016, and to those who have joined DuraSpace for the first time as new members. Our 2016 campaign concluded last month although we welcome new members year-round. Here is where we landed compared to our annual targets:

FEDORA (David)

Fedora 4.6.1; Proposals for Open Repositories 2017 Fedora IG; Fedora API Extension Architecture (API-X) ready for feedback

The Fedora Team is pleased to release the Fedora 4.6.1 patch which resolves two issues: concurrent creation of repository resources may introduce an invalid state and; upgrade to Modeshape 4.6.2. Read more here.

The Fedora API Extension Architecture (API-X) working group has been planning a milestone release and associated demo of the API-X framework and an assortment of extensions. Please participate in evaluation and feedback. Read more here.

To support the development of DSpace 7.0 which will implement Angular 2 as the new technology for the DSpace UI, replacing both JSPUI and XMLUI in DSpace 7, DCAT (DSpace Community Advisory Team) is organizing a DSpace 7 UI Outreach Group. The aim of the group is to keep organize and process community feedback of to help development teams focus on development. The OR2017 DSpace Interest Group program committee invites you to submit Interest Group proposals. This is a unique opportunity to meet and share experiences with other DSpace users and developers from around the world in Brisbane, Australia. Whether you’re a developer, researcher, repository manager, administrator or practitioner, we would like to hear from you. Read more here.

A large international community of DSpace committers contribute to advancing the platform–learn more about them here. Recently the DSpace committer team welcomed Art Lowel from Atmire. Art has been the driving force behind the Mirage 1 and 2 themes for XMLUI. He submitted an Ember JS prototype in last year's UI prototype challenge and was instrumental in the development of the Angular 2 UI prototype. Additionally, he will be leading the UI team for DSpace 7. Read more here.

VIVO 2017 Conference news; VIVO 1.10 planning; social media and VIVO

2017 Conference Vice Chairs will join 2017 Conference chair Alex Viggio  and Conference Program chair Violeta Ilik as they lead preparations for next year's conference.  Paul Albert of Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City has agreed to serve as conference vice chair. Eric Meeks of the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) has agreed to serve as program vice chair. 

The  is hard at work preparing next year's conference.  If you would like to join the VIVO 2017 Conference Planning Task Force please contact Alex Viggio.  We look forward to seeing you in New York in 2017!

The Development Interest Group continues its review of VIVO 1.10 Release PlanningJIRAs related to the development, and the work of task forces contributing to the development.  All developers are welcome to join this effort.
