Currently, two planning groups have been established to undertake this investigation, the notes of their meeting are publicly available there DSpace and DSpace-CRIS Planning Groups
DSpace-CRIS is an extended version of DSpace that embraces the out-of-the-box data model flexibility introduced in DSpace with the Configurable Entities. This concept has existed in DSpace-CRIS since 2010 and has been extensively explored by DSpace-CRIS users to empower their repositories.
Many DSpace-CRIS users use the DSpace-CRIS to run more a modern Institution Repository supporting a more distributed and decentralized management of the content involving not Institution' roles other than information specialists, such as researchers, directors, etc., in keeping the content updated and accurate. No additional complexity, nor features exclusively needed by specific use cases, nor entities unwanted by the Institution are required to stay enabled in DSpace-CRIS, configuration can be adapted to match the extact need of the Institution. Some users extend the repository scope to cover or overlap the needs of a CRIS / RIMS system or adapt the configuration to data model beyond the research domain, such as the Cultural Heritage covering the needs of GLAM (Gallery Library Archive Museum) Institutions.
This section aims to provide as much information as possible about the differences between DSpace and DSpace-CRIS to help:
DSpace-CRIS users provide the right context for their request and target issue/improvement/feature request to the right GitHub repositories: the one in the DSpace organization if it pertains to functionality provided by the standard DSpace or the 4Science repositories if it is specific to DSpace-CRIS;
DSpace users to understand the added value and features provided by DSpace-CRIS
Volunteer support for DSpace-CRIS is provided over the same channels of standard DSpace.
